just a quick post to let you know that this week has become a Very Bad Week (and looks like it may carry on into a Very Bad Month). i’m personally ok, but there’s an awful family thing going on that is taking a lot of my focus & energy (& that i can’t really go into detail about in a public forum). if stock isn’t appearing in the shop as quickly as you’d like, or i don’t get back to emails or tweets immediately, it’s because my brain is elsewhere just now – i hope you can be patient & i’ll try to get back on track as soon as i can.

the web shop will still be open as usual & i’ll still be posting orders out regularly. if i have to make any changes to my studio hours i’ll try to give as much notice as i can (although that might not always be feasible) by posting on twitter and in this thread in the Old Maiden Aunt group on Ravelry.

as you probably already know, every year in april, Royal Mail increases their postage prices. to try & keep things fair, as well as to give my customers a bit of a break, i wait until the beginning of may to increase my postage costs – and it’s about that time again!

up until now, i’ve based my postage costs on the actual price (including a few pence to help cover packaging costs) of sending one skein of yarn – that’s meant that if you order more than one skein of yarn, particularly if you’re outwith the UK, i’ve been absorbing the extra postage charges (and you’ve been getting a bit of a bargain!). unfortunately, the costs of international postage over 250g has really jumped this year; and Royal Mail, in their infinite wisdom, has decided to completely revamp their UK parcel system and introduce new sizing restrictions.

the additional costs for larger parcels have gone up so much this year that i simply can’t afford to absorb the extra costs. and unfortunately (i’m sure you can see where this is going!) that means i’ll need to pass on some of the extra costs to you, my lovely customers.

so, as of 1st may 2013, i’ll be increasing my postage prices, and will also be creating staggered flat rate costs based on the weight/size of your parcel, using the number of skeins you’ve ordered to set the postage cost. this means that as of the 1st may, postage costs will be as follows:

UK: 1-5 skeins = £3.50; 6-8 skeins = £6.00; 9+ skeins = £9.50

Europe (including non-EU countries): 1-2 skeins = £4.00; 3-4 skeins = £5.00; 5-7 skeins = £6.50; 8+ skeins = £8.50

International (non-UK/Europe): 1-2 skeins = £5.00; 3-4 skeins = £7.50; 5-7 skeins = £10.00; 8+ skeins = £12.00.

non-UK parcel charges are all weight-based, so for some parcels, i’ll probably still be absorbing some of the actual postage costs for you. for UK parcels, the major problem is parcel size (unless you order a LOT of yarn!), but some skeins can be packed flatter than others – depending on the base yarn, i might be able to send a UK parcel at a cheaper rate (flatter parcels mean cheaper prices!). in both cases, if i’m able to send a parcel at a cheaper rate than the one i’ve actually charged you, i’ll refund you the difference straightaway; if i’m sending the parcel at a higher rate than the one i’ve actually charged you, you win!! ;)

i hope you can understand why i need to make these changes – i try my best to keep things as fair as i can, but unfortunately i just can’t afford to absorb the big price increases this year without losing an awful lot of money. (you can see the details of Royal Mail’s 2013 price structure here.)

i try to eat healthily, but it’s a bit of a struggle for me. i have a serious sweet tooth, & it’s always been my downfall. but i recently discovered something wonderful, & had to share it with all of you – just in case you’re in the same boat! here it is……

baked oatmeal recipe (makes six portions)

100g porridge oats
25g roasted chopped hazelnuts
150g frozen raspberries
50g chopped dates
1-2 apples, peeled & sliced
1 egg
250ml milk

preheat the oven to 190 degrees and lightly grease the bottom & sides of a rectangular baking tin (mine is 26x19cm). cover the bottom of the tin with the sliced apple. beat the egg & milk together in a small bowl or jug. set aside half the nuts, then mix all the other ingredients together in another bowl.

sprinkle the dry mix evenly over the apple slices, then pour the egg & milk mixture over everything (try not to leave any dry bits!). then sprinkle the nuts you set aside earlier over the top.
cover your pan loosely with foil, just to stop the top from browning too quickly! bake for 30-35 minutes, removing the foil when you’ve got about 5 minutes baking time left.

once it’s cooled a bit you can slice it up – it will keep in the fridge for about a week. i tend to make a batch at the start of the week, and eat one slice a day for the rest of the week. it comes out at roughly 180 calories per portion, and i find it incredibly sweet & cake-like! but it’s actually very healthy, and hugely filling, especially if you have it with a little yogurt. cake for breakfast?….

….YUM!!!

(recipe adapted from “So, How’s It Taste?“)

as you will all probably know already, just before the start of the 2012-2013 tax year, i was about to hit the threshold which would require me to register for VAT. throughout this tax year, i’ve been VAT-registered, and have had to add an extra 20% tax to everything i sell within the UK/EU. it’s meant that my prices (within the UK/EU) have increased – in some cases by a fairly big margin, especially for things like club memberships (alas, this extra money doesn’t go to me, but gets passed straight on to the taxman!). it’s also meant that my workload in terms of accounting & admin has increased, as has the amount of money i have to pay out in taxes & fees (by quite a lot!).

unfortunately, it’s also meant that my sales have dropped considerably compared to previous years – i know we all have a lot less money at the moment, and that an extra 20% can make a huge difference. as a result, my turnover this year has dropped to such an extent that i’m now no longer legally required to be VAT registered – and frankly, i’ve come to the conclusion that unless i can hugely increase my productivity (which would probably mean hiring other people do to all my admin & web work, and most likely some of the dyeing as well), i may never make enough sales to make up the gap between what i earned before VAT and what i’ve earned this year.

i really don’t want to change the way i do business – i love doing everything myself, and keeping in touch with all my customers, and wouldn’t want to have it any other way. so i’ve decided that i will be much better off financially – and much happier! – if i de-register for VAT, and simply produce/sell enough yarn so that my yearly turnover stays below the VAT threshold for the foreseeable future. i submitted all the necessary paperwork, and have just had it confirmed by HMRC that as of 31st march 2013, Old Maiden Aunt Yarns will no longer be VAT registered.

here’s what this will mean for you, my lovely customers!! the studio will be closed, and the web shop will be empty, from 1st-6th april – this will give me enough time to do an end-of-year stocktake, finalise my 2012-2013 VAT accounts, pay the taxman any VAT that i still owe, and remove the VAT prices from the website. once i’ve removed the VAT from everything, i’ll be re-working my price structure slightly. most of my yarns will simply go back to the price they were last year, before this whole VAT debacle started; there are a few that will be a little cheaper, and a couple that will be a little more expensive, but all of them will be VAT-free (hurrah!). i won’t be restocking any yarns while this is happening, but i am still dyeing various things, so when the shop re-opens there should be a good number of yarns back in stock. throughout the year, i will also be limiting my production levels very slightly, to ensure that i stay below the VAT threshold, and don’t have to go through this awfulness ever again. based on sales from this year & previous years, this shouldn’t mean that anything becomes harder to get hold of – i’ll certainly continue to do my best to make sure that you can all still get your regular yarn fix!!

i hope you can all understand why things have gone the way they have this past year, and aren’t too annoyed at the changes. i’m doing this job because i love it – i love dyeing yarn, i love seeing what you all make with it, and i love the knitting community & my wonderful customers. but i also love being able to pay my mortgage, and buy groceries, and put petrol in the car, which means performing a constant balancing act between what’s fair & kind for my customers, and what will help my business & my profitability. for obvious reasons, i can’t go into every financial detail on the web, but if you have any questions or concerns, please ask here in the comments or over on the discussion thread in the Old Maiden Aunt group on Ravelry, and i’ll do my best to answer. and as always, thank you all so much for another year of being able to do what i love – i wouldn’t be here without you.

i’ve never been very good at sewing. although i did get my Brownies sewing badge, i’m fairly certain it was then stitched to my sash by my mum. in highschool home economics, i was the one hiding at the back of the class, trying not to machine-stitch my fingers together. now, i can just about manage to seam a knitted project, as long as there’s nothing too complicated to figure out. there’s quite a few crafty things that i’d like to be able to do – that is, i’d like to have the finished object! – but i’ve been put off by the fact that they involved stitching or sewing of some kind. but, i may have just discovered something that i can do….

i spotted some interesting looking stitching via Pinterest, and clicked through to discover it was Sashiko (tutorial via The Purl Bee). i’m a big fan of simple, clean geometric patterns, but once again, the stitching aspect put me off – i was sure i’d quite like to have some sashiko-stitched crafty objects, but not so sure that i’d actually like to make them myself! but after Edinburgh Yarn Fest, i had a tiny bit of extra cash, and thought i could maybe treat myself to something small – so i did a little googling, and found these sashiko sampler kits for sale. i ordered two, and they arrived yesterday, so i read the online tutorial (linked above) and started – with some trepidation – stitching. and i can’t stop.

it does still feel a bit like i’m in the remedial stitching class – it’s a very basic running stitch, and all you have to do is follow the printed lines (the pre-printed sampler patterns even show you how wide to make your stitches, and come with a little diagram that tells you the right order for stitching the various lines & shapes!!). but i’m quite impressed that i’m managing to stitch at all – and i even learned how to do a quilter’s knot!! and there’s something in this that really appeals to my autistic brain – it’s so neat & tidy, and so repetitive, that i’m finding it very soothing. i’ve got two samplers to work through (the above red on white, and a pattern of overlapping circles in navy on white), then who knows? i’ve discovered there are any number of pattern books as well as loads of downloadable free pattern templates – i suppose i could do sashiko squares on any fabric backing, in any colour thread, and see what happens! i’m not sure what i’ll do with them when they’re finished (any ideas?) but i’m certainly enjoying doing them – even if it’s not nearly as impressive as what some of my stitchy friends are making.

i made an amazing find this weekend, at a vintage store in glasgow’s west end.

i was (naturally) drawn across the road and into the shop by a sign on the pavement promising “all knits & cashmere – £10!!!”. i thought it was worth a look, but didn’t really expect to find anything good. but hold on – this one feels like proper wool. and is that a steeked armhole?!?….

oh my goodness. look at those floats…

and the inside of that steek….

this is the REAL THING. it’s beautifully made – the floats are incredibly even, and the colours carefully chosen with a perfect, muted blend & contrast. whoever made this definitely knew what they were doing, and did it well – although current knitting wisdom says you should never knot your ends, that’s exactly what this knitter has done, and the effect is wonderfully neat. each colourwork band uses a different combination of colours, and the various ends of each section have been carefully knotted & trimmed at exactly the same place on the side “seam”.

and despite current “wisdom”, this technique seems to have been a good one – there’s not a loose end in sight, even though it’s been well-worn & just as well cared for. the only obvious wear shows in a barely-visible darn in the chest, which i only noticed because it interrupts the colourwork pattern ever-so-slightly.

and there’s a tiny, as-yet unmended small hole in the right shoulder – i may need to practice my darning skills to make my own barely-visible repairs, and show my respect for the skills of whoever made this.

but apart from that it’s in perfect condition. i’d love to know how old it is, who made it, and why it ended up in a vintage shop for only £10 (somebody clearly didn’t know what quality work they were giving away!). because from the looks of these repeating motifs…

it was made with a great deal of love.

thank you, unknown knitter – i’ll look after it for you now.

i thought i’d check back in & let you know how things are going with my new year’s “suggestions”! so far i’m managing to keep up with most of them (although perhaps i ought to have suggested that i blog more often, as well…).

i’ve been reading real, actual books every day – a little bit before bed, and a little bit more when i wake up most mornings (i’m extremely lucky to have a partner who gets up for work much earlier than i do, and who brings me coffee in bed before she leaves the house, so i can take my time adjusting to the realities of the day). so far, i’ve worked my way through the way the crow flies (anne marie macdonald), a james anderson omnibus, miss ranskill comes home (barbara euphan todd), pilgrim (timothy findley), and the tattooed map (barbara hodgson). & i’m really enjoying it – there’s something so lovely about reading a “proper” book that you just don’t get from an e-reader (i’m still taking my kindle to work, though, so i can read the paper at lunchtime!).

running-wise, i decided just over a week ago to cut out my longest (5.5miles/60mins) run altogether – it just wasn’t feeling good, and the last time i did it, i ended up with a slightly sore ankle which meant it couldn’t run at all for a few days (boo). now i’m running three times a week for 30min, and covering 2.5-3miles per run (some days are better than others!) and it seems to be working much better so far. i’ve also just bought my first pair of zero-drop shoes (i’ve been working my way down through gradually more minimalist shoes over the past year) so i’m adding in one or two extra tiny runs so i can start phasing over to these (pretty weird-looking, but so light & comfortable!):

i still don’t love hills, but i’m getting a little better at them, so i might be starting to hate them less. & i can’t do a pull-up yet, but i’m still hanging in there. i definitely feel a lot fitter – and although i did slip up & weigh myself a couple of times, i managed to avoid the scales for the most part, and felt a lot better about myself as a result.

in knitting, i’ve managed to finish a really fab top (which hopefully i’ll get some photos of soon!). it fits my non-resolution requirements exactly – a classic, clean, simple design with a few great details that i know i’ll wear until it falls apart. i’ve also tried to introduce more colour into my daily wardrobe, with varying results – it’s so easy sometimes to just to pull out the standby dark & drab old clothes when you’re tired & busy, and sometimes “planning” an outfit can be a bit of a chore. so i might need to try harder on this one – and in a first step, i’ve been scouring ebay to try & find some bargain-price, colourful & good-quality new clothes, with the view to replacing some of my trusty black tops with something a little more interesting.

but the one suggestion that i’ve managed to stick to without fail is, of all things, nail varnish! i re-manicure every weekend, & i’m finding it really fun – there’s a truly dangerous amount of nail varnish colours on the market, and i could easily see this becoming a bit of a problem (SO MANY COLOURS!!!). if you follow me on twitter, you’ll have seen me posting my “nail varnish of the week” every week since new years. i’m not the most glamourous person in the world, but i’m having a lot of fun with this one – even though my job is a little hard on my hands, and my manicure is a complete mess by the end of the week, that’s fine – it just means i can look forward to next week’s colour! so far i’ve learned what should have probably been obvious – that good quality nail varnish goes on a lot more smoothly than the cheap stuff, so i don’t make nearly as much mess if i invest in something nice. and, that some colours look really good in the bottle, but once they’re on – not so much.

but so far, it seems to be going well – how about you?

like a lot of folk at this time of year, i’m tempted by the making of new year’s resolutions. i’m always a bit put off by the word “resolution”, though – it doesn’t really offer much in the way of wiggle room, and whenever i’ve made resolutions, i either put myself under huge stress & pressure trying not to break them, or i end up feeling awful because i haven’t managed to keep them.
so this year, i’m going to start my new year with some suggestions to myself – a few things that i’d quite like to accomplish, or try to, but which won’t make me feel like an eejit if i don’t manage all of them.

so, this year:

i suggest that i need to start reading proper books again. like my good friend Ms. Bookish, i’ve read quite a lot this year – unfortunately, also like Ms Bookish, most of it has been rubbish (although i’m more inclined to forgettable crime fiction than regency romances!). i have shelves full of wonderful books, some of which i haven’t read in years, and a few of which, shamefully, i haven’t read at all. as much as i love my kindle & its portability, there is something lovely about reading a proper book – so this year, all bedtime reading will be actual, real-life books. i’m going to start by working my way through these, then i plan to get reacquainted with my local library.

i suggest that i might need to change my running plan. so far, i’ve been focusing mainly on distance – i was training for a Very Long Run (and the running part of it was the least of my worries!) – but my plans went awry when i developed tendonitis in my ankle. my physio is of the opinion that my increased mileage plus my slightly wonky feet was the cause of my injury, and that my feet weren’t really structurally built for long distance. so i need to revamp my running style, and focus on getting faster rather than going farther. since i’m built a bit like a penguin, this is going to be a bit of a challenge, but i’ll see how it goes!

i suggest that i might need to learn to love hills. i’ve moved away from the completely flat seafront to a tiny but surprisingly hilly town, and it’s definitely been a struggle! this is one of the smallest hills on my running route, so i definitely need to get used to it.

in other fitness, i suggest that i be able to complete at least one proper pull-up. i own a pull-up bar (it’s in one of the doorframes at the studio!) and every time i walk past it, i hang off it for a bit. but i’ve yet to achieve an actual pull-up – it turns out that it’s a surprisingly difficult maneuvre, especially if you perhaps weigh a tad more than you ought, and have the upper body strength of a ten-year-old (sigh).

i’d also suggest that in general, i try to get a bit fitter again. the tendonitis plus my Tough Mudder hamstring injury, followed by a little too much holiday sloth & far too many holiday treats, has left me less in shape than i’d like to be. since i have a bit of a history of hating my body, though, i need to do it sensibly, so i’ll be eating healthy things, working on my running, and avoiding the scales completely for at least the month of january – instead of weighing myself, i’m going to keep track of how i feel & how my clothes are fitting.

speaking of clothes, i suggest that i ought to knit myself some more lovely things. i’ve pared down my Ravelry queue quite a bit, but there’s still an awful lot on there that i desperately want to make! i also suggest that i might need to focus more on what i’ll actually love to wear instead of what i’d love to knit – as much as i enjoy knitting complex cables or difficult lace, i tend to get much more wear out of classic, simple designs, and my wardrobe could use a few more basic but beautiful sweaters & cardis.

& in the category of utter frivolity, i also suggest that i will try to have more fun with my appearance. i have quite a lot of bright, colourful clothing hiding in my cupboards, but for someone who spends so much of her life working with colour, i end up wearing a lot of black. so i plan to drag out all my bright & colourful clothes, mix up colours & patterns, & generally be a bit silly – and try not to worry about what other people will think of how i look, but of how i feel in what i’m wearing. a friend is learning how to be a hairdresser, so i might volunteer for some hair-dyeing experiments, just for fun. and i’m determined that this is the year that i learn how to use nail varnish properly – i love all the colours you can get, and it seems like such a fun thing, but i’ve never mastered the art of putting it on! i’ve ordered these fab colours as motivation – the start of the year in scotland can be a bit bleak, so this might be a good antidote to all the gray.

those are all the suggestions i’ve come up with so far – what are your ideas for this new year?

it’s that time again – time to start planning for the 2013 preview club!

as some of you may already know, every year i do a small “special collection” of colourways, built around a central theme. & every year, i run a sock yarn club for fifty members, who will be the first to receive the new colourway collection. the club will run from january 2013 to march 2013, and will include six brand-new colourways, with one shipment each month for three months. you can get a single membership, where each shipment will have two skeins of sock yarn, one of each colourway (base yarns TBC, but they will all be in the superwash merino/blends family); or you can get a double membership, where each shipment will have two skeins of each colourway. there will also be special club-only extra treats, all based on the same theme – double memberships don’t get double treats, though! the colourways will be available to all customers when the club ends in april 2013, but the themed extras are club-exclusive.

i’m still working on costings – postage & materials costs do go up slightly every year, and this year there’s also VAT to contend with on the UK/EU orders. but as a rough guide, last year UK/EU members paid £130 (single membership) or £220 (double membership), and non-UK/EU members paid £140 (single membership) or £230 (double membership). i should be able to finalise this year’s prices within the next week or so.

so, how do you get a membership? easy – just send an email to yarnpreviewclub AT gmail DOT com with your name, country, contact email address, and Ravelry username (if you have one). then, cross your fingers!!! i’ll be taking names from now until 29th november, and will randomly draw the fifty lucky people on 30th november. if your name is drawn, you’ll have one week to purchase your club membership before your slot gets passed to the next person on the list.
adding your name to the draw doesn’t obligate you to purchase a membership – if your name is drawn, but your circumstances have changed, or you decide you’re not interested, that’s fine – i’ll pass on your membership to the next person on the list. so, drop me an email at yarnpreviewclub AT gmail DOT com to get your name in the draw!!!

(you can also bid on a single membership – as well as other cool stuff – in the fundraising auction for Judith Mackenzie! a single memmerbship to the preview club will be added to the auction site soon!)
