Where is your yarn made? All of the yarns that I sell are hand-dyed by me in my wee studio in Scotland. The mill-spun base yarn that I use is as ethically sourced as possible, and is processed at mills local to where the fibre is produced – UK-breed wool is milled in the UK, and the exotic blends are milled at their source in South America. The Corriedale & Shetland bases are custom spun for me in the UK.
What's your dyeing process? I use professional acid dyes to dye my yarns, and use a combination of kettle-dyeing and low-water immersion dyeing to make the colourways in my range. All standard colourways are repeatable, but due to the nature of hand-dyeing, each dyelot batch will be slightly different. If a colourway is described as a “one-off”, it’s the only one of its kind & the colourway won’t be repeated, so snap it up while you can! All dyes are fixed to be wash- & light- fast; I would still recommend washing items made from hand-dyed yarns separately for the first few washes as some dyes can still bleed slightly when first washed (especially deeper/darker colourways).
How do I find out when you'll be updating your shop? The best thing to do is follow me on Instagram or Twitter (you can find me using the links at the bottom of the page!) as I always announce shop updates there. Dates and times of updates will vary so following me on social media is the best way to find out what I'm up to!
What I want is always out of stock!! Or, I need more skeins than you have in the shop!! If you’re planning a larger project and need more yardage than is currently available in the online shop, just send me an email - I can usually custom dye larger batches of most yarns/colourways. You can also email me with special requests if you're absolutely desperate for something specific but can never seem to find it in stock. Please be aware that as each dyelot is slightly different, I can’t guarantee that a custom-dyed batch will match previous dyelots; also be aware that depending on my workload, I may not be able to custom dye yarn immediately so please plan ahead if possible!
What does "dyed-to-order" mean? If a yarn is listed as "dyed-to-order", it means that it isn't ready to ship. Once you've placed your order, I'll dye your yarn especially for you, and ship it out as soon as it's ready - usually within a maximum of two weeks.
How much does shipping cost? Shipping is charged based on the order weight and your shipping country. Current shipping charges are as folllows:
UK: 100-800 grams = £3.50; more than 800 grams = £8.50.
Europe (including non-EU countries): 100-500 grams = £5.50; more than 500 grams = £8.50.
International (non-UK/Europe): 100-400 grams = £6.50; 450-700 grams = £12.00; more than 700 grams = £15.00.
Can I return my yarn if I don't like it? I'm happy to accept returns & issue refunds for recently-purchased yarn that is in untouched, resaleable condition; please email me first before returning your yarn!! Please be aware that I am only able to refund the purchase price of the yarn and will not refund postage costs or reimburse you for return postage unless the yarn is faulty.
Can I order a shade card of your colourways? Due to the nature of hand-dyed yarn, I don’t offer shade/sample cards for my yarns, as each dyelot/base yarn will affect how the colour comes out. You can see samples of all my standard colourways here, which will give you an idea of what each colourway looks like.
I'm a yarn shop; can I stock your yarns? If you're interested in stocking my book, please get in touch! Since I do all my dyeing single-handedly, I'm currently working to capacity and am not able to wholesale to new stockists. I love doing trunk shows, though, so if you're interested in hosting an Old Maiden Aunt trunk show at your yarn shop please email me!
I have more questions that aren't answered here!! For more help & support, you can always check out the Old Maiden Aunt group on Ravelry which is full of friendly and helpful people. Or, you can send me an email & I'll do my best to answer any questions you still have!!
